WINTHERWAX team, Miha Humar, Boštjan Lesar, Nejc Thaler (all Biotechnical faculty, University of Ljubljana), Gregor Rep (Silvaprodukt), Barbara Šubic and Aleš Ugovšek (both M SORA) received the Puh Certificate of Recognition 2016 for inventions, development achievements and the use of scientific results in introducing innovation in business practice. Team was awarded for development and implementation of WINTHERWAX window to the market.

M SORA applied for The European Business Awards for the Environment 2016/2017 (EBAE) as a national winner in Slovenia with WINTHERWAX window and reached the finals! European Commission wrote: "Being an entrant into the awards is an achievement in itself, and the prestige of reaching the final selection of all European companies for the award should not be overlooked." Additionally jury wrote in feedback: "The jury applauded the qualities of this initiative for a small niche market."

M SORA was awarded with Golden national award for innovations for passive window made of thermally modified spruce Nature Optimo XLT! Innovation was presented as TED talk at Innovation day 2016.

Our person behind the project of the month November is Head of development and technology in M SORA company Barbara Šubic.

What is your task in the WINTHERWAX project?

My task in the project is to coordinate technical processes in M SORA company and implement the wax-surface treatment in full-scale production of Wintherwax windows.

  

What motivates you to work on the WINTHERWAX project?

Implementation of new ideas and processes directly into production and our products, which can be placed on the market immediately, is something that makes for me the project very excited.  

 

If a fairy granted you a wish related to WINTHERWAX, what would it be?

That thermally modified timber windows, coated with wax would be cheaper to produce, would have all characteristics much better than standard windows and could be sold for much larger price than standard windows. 

 

Which wood species or wood material is in your opinion the most overrated in which one has the biggest potential in the future?

The best things are simple things. Spruce will stay further on the leading material for wooden-windows. I can not say which one is most overrated.

 

Tell us about your education and your current work.

I am Civil engineering and a PhD student at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Ljubljana, working on improvement of bending strength and stiffness of reinforced spruce window beams. In M SORA I am Head of Development and Technology.

 

Tell us about most interesting activity/activities in your free time?

Mostly I enjoy spending time in nature with my family. I love running, cycling and mountaineering, with my husband we are training standard and latino-american dances for the last 10 years.

Environmetal awards are given each year in the scope of conference for environmentally friendly product, procedure or service, environmentally friendly company and international enviromnental partnership. This year an award for environmentally friendly product was given to WINTHERWAX window

Our person behind the project of the month October is professor at University of Ljubljana Miha Humar.

What is your task in the WINTHERWAX project?

My task is related to coordination of the research work within subcontractors in this project. At our field test site we have exposed one of the test cubes and we are responsible for monitoring. Furthermore, we will evaluate selected properties of the materials investigated in laboratory and determine their performance against blue stain fungi, degrading fungi and water.

What motivates you to work on the WINTHERWAX project?

I like research work in general. Furthermore I like challenging projects, like this one. I believe that we can obtain several new information within this project. 

If a fairy granted you a wish related to WINTHERWAX, what would it be?

To develop economically acceptable, effective and environmentally sound procedure for wood protection. 

Which wood species or wood material is in your opinion the most overrated in which one has the biggest potential in the future?

This question depends on the region. I think that Siberian larch is one of the most overrated wood  species in Slovenia. There are several wood species in Central Europe with unused potential. One of the most challenging one is beech. If there would be proper treatment procedure for beech developed, this would open a lot of new possibilities for its application.

Tell us about your education and your current work.

I finished undergraduate and post graduate study of Wood Science and Technology at University of Ljubljana. My PhD was about performance of copper-ethanolamine based wood preservatives against copper tolerant wood decay fungi. My research activities expand a little bit in these years. I am still working with copper based preservatives but our tests expand from short term lab trials to long term filed testing. Furthermore, our group works on the durability of the European wood species, hydrophobisation with waxes and oils and on thermally modified wood. We are particularly proud to our model house that was build in 2013. This model house offers as excellent platform for testing of various materials.

Tell us about most interesting activity/activities in your free time?

In the afternoons and weekends, I try to spend as much time as possible with my family, particularly with my three kids; Asja (10), Bor (7) and Žan (4) and wife Alexandra. Living in the village enable us to spend a lot of time in the nature in the forests and in the mountains. We all like hiking, and even my youngest son walked up to 2000 m this summer. We tried to spend few day of holidays in Croatian coast and in the French or Italian Alps every year. This summer we have excellent holidays in Annecy. Beside that, I like running, and the beer after even more. I tried to attend half marathon race in Ljubljana every autumn.

What is your task in the WINTHERWAX project?

I am coordinator of the project.

What motivates you to work on the WINTHERWAX project?

I know thermally modified wood from my student times and now I have opportunity to introduce this material into high-class windows. Beside this it is great motivation to upgrade such windows with naturally based wax for external use as this is something that nobody has done so far.

If a fairy granted you a wish related to WINTHERWAX, what would it be?

To get fantastic results from test fields around the Europe and from accelerated ageing test, and to commercialise WINTHERWAX product as much as possible.

Which wood species or wood material is in your opinion the most overrated in which one has the biggest potential in the future?

I guess Siberian larch is the one which is overrated and overpraised. Second part of question is harder… Every material has it pros and cons. I guess WINTHERWAX material has definitely great potential.

Tell us about your education and your current work.

I finished my PhD work at University of Ljubljana, Department of wood science and technology at Biotechnical faculty. My topic was bonding of wood with liquefied wood. At the moment I work as a project manager at M SORA company where we produce timber and timber-aluminium windows.

Tell us about most interesting activity/activities in your free time?

Building 2,5 meters high tower from 2x2 Lego Duplo bricks with my children can be quite a challenge J

Samples of thermally modified spruce that were treated with oil and wax were exposed 7 months ago to natural environment. These samples were recently tested for hydrophobicity and results are impressive. Hydrophobicity of waxed thermally modified spruce is very high and it didn´t get worse in 7 months time. WP1 was succesfully finished in time and final formulation of naturally based wax was determined at the beggining of June. Great number of tests and researches were done in first three months of WINTHERWAX project to optimise the formulation and to gain the best effect on wood.

SME INSTRUMENT Phase 2 coordinators kick-off day was held in Brussels on 20.4.2015. Beside all usefull information project coordinators had an opportunuty to meet their project officers.

 On 14.4.2015 we had a successfull WINTHERWAX kick-off metting which was held at M SORA company in Žiri. Partners from Slovenia, Germany, Spain and Sweden were present.

WINTHERWAX project has a brand new logo!

Logo contains a passive timber window Nature Optimo XLT made of Silvapro®  thermally modified spruce, drops of water on the surface of windows which represents the hydrophobicity of the surface and a snowflake which is related to high insulation performance of window especially in cold wint(h)er days and cold climates.
